Winter Energy-Saving Ideas
Here are some great tips from BC Hydro on how you can reduce your home’s energy consumption during the winter months:
- Upgrade your thermostat from manual to programmable. This will allow you to program the temperature of the house for different times or days.
- Close blinds and curtains to keep in heat.
- Check doors and windows for drafts. Draftproofing can reduce heat loss by 5 to 10%.
- Schedule an annual tune-up for your furnace, heat pump or boiler.
- Put on a sweater instead of turning up the thermostat.
- Close the fireplace chimney damper between fires to keep warm air in during the winter.
- Use holiday light-emitting diode (LED) strings. They use 95 per cent less electricity and last 10 times longer than standard lights.
