Picture Hanging Tips
Recently my husband decided to try his hand at hanging some art in his den. When I came home and saw his handiwork I could tell right away that the pictures were hung too high. But how do you know how high they should be? After doing some research, it seems that there is no definitive answer since every room is different. However, I did uncover the following tips that should help you get your pictures hanging properly:
- As a rule of thumb, artwork looks best when it is hung so that the centre of the picture is at about ‘eye level’.
- Since everyone’s eyes are at different heights, most sources suggest using anywhere from 5’6” to 5’10” as ‘standing eye level’. However, since some rooms are meant for sitting and some for mostly standing, you may wish to choose a shorter height that is more in line with your eye level when sitting.
- Start by measuring up from the floor and place a light pencil mark on the wall. For fixing my husband’s picture, I used 5’8” as eye level.
- Pulling the wire tight on the back of the artwork (as if it were hanging), measure the distance between the wire and the centre of the picture.
- Add this distance to ‘eye level’ and place your picture hook at that height.
Voila! Your picture should look like it’s hung at the right height. When I measured my husband’s attempt at hanging the picture, I found it was hung so that the centre of the picture was at 6’5”! It has now been fixed and when I look at the artwork now, it just feels ‘right’. While these tips will help you get started, don’t be afraid to adjust your artwork up or down to get the right feel.
