Caring for granite counters
Granite is an expensive counter top material, however, with regular maintenace and care it will last the life of your home. Here are some tips to help ensure the longevity of your granite counters.
Everyday:
- You should regularly clean your granite counters with a damp, warm cloth (you can also use a few drops of mild or antibacterial dishwashing detergent). Wipe up any spills immediately, particularly those from acidic foods (eg. Coffee, wine, vinegar, fruit juices).
- Don’t use abrasive dry or soft cleaners.
- After wiping down the counters, use a soft dry cloth to ‘buff’ the surface to regain the shine.
Every few months:
- Every 1-3 months wipe down the counters with a special granite cleaner. Specific granite polishes can also be purchased that can be applied periodically to renew the glossy finish.
Every few years:
- Apply a sealant: Every 1 to 2 years you should re-seal the granite. Check with your manufacturer or local hardware store for available sealant products for granite.
- Fill in any chips or divots with an epoxy filler, then the sealant.
Resurfacing/Refinishing: Over time, normal wear and tear will cause abrasions and potential damages to the factory finish. To remove scratches, etch marks and dull spots it is recommended that you contact a stone care professional.
