Prune dying trees

A couple of weeks ago, we awoke to a loud crash to find that a 15′ cedar had fallen on our house during a particularly strong windstorm (actually it was freakishly strong - I’m amazed more didn’t go wrong). Luckily, the house wasn’t damaged and cleanup went really well with some help from our family, but still the whole episode gave us pause..

I had for some time suspected that this tree was at least unhealthy if not dying (most of the leaves had turned brown) although it never occurred to me that it might become a hazard.

We definitely learned a lesson, and a cheap one at that. So, here’s one more thing to add to the list of home maintenance chores, perhaps somewhere after cleaning the gutters and before turning off the outside taps for winter: check for presence of dead or dying trees and deal with them before they fall on the house
