Organize your composting
This year we have decided that our composting needs an overhaul. Currently, we have a large wooden box on the side of our yard where we dump all our yard waste. It tends to fill up quickly and looks quite ugly from the street. I’m not sure you can actually call it a compost.

We don’t do anything to maintain it and we’ve never attempted to retrieve the dark black mush that has accumulated in the bottom. Regardless of whether it qualifies or not, it has got to be moved out of sight. We also have a worm composite box inside that has been moderately successful. The worms seem happy enough but they aren’t eating as much as I would have liked. I will blog some more about worm composting later.
So the last 2 weekends we have been clearing out some space in our backyard to be our composting area and we’ve been been formulating our master composting plan.
This is what our solution includes:
Outside in the backyard
- a large wooden box with two compartments, aprox 6′ x 3′. One side will contain yard waste that can go in the compost (branches, leaves, grass) and the other side will contain yard waste that needs to go to the dump (weeds, big stuff etc).
- two black plastic compost bins, one round and one retangle. These will be where all the exciting composting action takes place. The bins will hold yard waste, vegetable and fruit scraps, tea bags, egg shells and whatever else is allowed in a compost.

In the house
- our worm compost bin. The worms can eat a few cups of kitchen waste each month and provide a good way of composting old newspaper.

- a bucket from Lee Valley for holding kitchen scraps that are on their way to the compost bins outside.

I will keep you all updated on the progress of our composting adventures and strongly recommend you give it a try yourselves!
