Making your home smell nice
I’m one of those people who is sensitive to smells. Not that I don’t like smelly things, just that I have smell “preferences”. I love the smell of flowers, freshly cut grass, new cars, baked goods or roasted red peppers. Needless to say, I am always looking for tips and ideas to keep my house smelling fresh and here are my favorites:
Rose Water
Someone gave me a bottle of rose linen water once and I use it all the time. I put it into a small spritzer bottle and spray my towels, shower curtain and pillow covers with it. You can buy cheap rose water in the east indian section of any grocery store.

Room spray
I like to keep some room spray with me while I’m cleaning. My current choice of room spray is Aspen Flower from Pier 1 Imports ($6US). It’s very tropical smelling. They describe it as a floral mix of tuberose, jasmine, violet, ylang, and lily, with hints of peach and vanilla overtones.

Lavender in the vacuum
One of my favorite tricks is to put about 2-3 tablespoons of dried lavender in the vacuum. It fills the room with a wonderful lavender scent while you vacuum. Give it a try, it really works!

Smoked Cinnamon and Cloves
During the winter holidays I love the smell of gingerbread cookies, mulled wine and mandrin oranges. Here is a cheap and easy way to make the whole house smell delicious. Take 3-4 sticks of cinnamon and 2-3 tablespoons of cloves and put them in a frying pan (don’t use cooking oil or anything, just straight in the pan). Put it on medium heat until they start to smoke, usually about 2-3 minutes. Take it off the heat once it’s smoking and walk around the house.

Lilacs and Lilies
These are my all time favorite smelling flowers. Just bring one sprig of either into your house and you’ll be smelling them for days. I get the lilacs from the trees in our yard and lilies from any flower shop.

Opening the windows
This one may seem obvious but nevertheless it’s still a great way to make your house smell good. Just open the windows for a few hours and let the fresh air in…

If you have any tips or tricks on how you like to make your home smell good, I’d love to hear them!
