Project Overview

This suburban, raised ranch homeowner was tired of his existing all white kitchen and wanted a more warm and inviting space. To create the desired look, he planned a complete kitchen renovation that included the removal of existing walls, new flooring, counters, cabinets, appliances and lighting. To keep this project within budget, he purchased all the cabinetry from Ikea and did almost all the work himself. The final result was a fabulously designed modern and open space for $30,000 CAD.

For the homeowner, the best new feature is the ability to enjoy cooking and socializing at the same time!

The Project Plan

How did you complete your project?

Using the Ikea kitchen planner, some help from my friends and my own renovation skills I took approximately 6 months to plan and complete the project.

Ikea Kitchen Planner

What were the major project components?

Gutting the existing space and tearing down an interior wall was a major task. We then had to lay the floor, draw out cabinets, drywall and then paint. We also replaced the solid white back door with a new door and window. We then installed new lighting, cabinets, counter tops and stainless steel appliances.

Ideas & Advice

What were your sources of inspiration?

My friends provided some great advice and I also used the web, including ideas from Central Roost.

What advice would you give to others planning a similar project?

It is difficult to confine a renovation to one area when you are working in a space that is interconnected, so be prepared to live with the dust. Finally, don't half do anything; gut everything right to the studs!
